Chapter VII

A Rescue

SULLEN anger was written all over the face of the desk sergeant when he came tramping back into the cell block an hour later. He slammed the outer door viciously and came to the cell occupied by the Green Lama. He fumbled in his pocket and brought out his keys, muttering to himself. The electric bolt in the door was already shot back and with a twist of the key the door swung open.

“Come on, you,” he said to the Green Lama.

“Time for questioning already?” the Green Lama asked, stepping out of the cell.

“Naw, some friend of yours got you bailed,” the sergeant said. “You must have some pull, buddy, that’s all I gotta say. The lieutenant is gonna be sore as hell about it, too.”

“What about my two friends?” the Green Lama asked.

“They ain’t included,” the sergeant said. “That’s the only thing good about it. Come on.” He led he way out of the cell block. At his desk, he stopped and gave the Green Lama the money and other things that had been taken from his pockets.

“Okay,” the sergeant said, “beat it, before the lieutenant gets back and decides to take a poke at you.”

“Can’t I get my friends out?” the Green Lama asked.

“No. Maybe your friend that got you out can, but you can’t.”

“Om! Ma-ni pad-me Hum!” the Green Lama said softly and strode out of the police station, leaving the sergeant staring after him with open mouth.

Out on the sidewalk, the Green Lama hesitated for a moment wondering if he should make an attempt to extricate Ken and Jean legally or wait until night and just take them from the jail. He failed to notice the good-looking blonde girl, sitting in a sport Packard roadster at the curb, until she spoke.

“Dr. Pali,” she said.

He glanced up quickly and saw the girl sitting there. She was no one that he had ever seen before.

“Yes?” he said.

“Of course, you don’t know me,” she said, “but I’m Leslie Long. It was I who managed to get you out of there.” She motioned towards the station house.

“You!” the Green Lama exclaimed. He had been puzzled about this, but his first thought had been that the leader of the Fifth Column had accomplished it since they wouldn’t be able to kill him while he was in prison. On second thought, perhaps that was still the truth of the matter and the girl was a part of the trap.

She nodded, smiling.

“Why only me?” he asked. “What about my friends?”

“I couldn’t get all three of you out at once but they’ll be out in about an hour…. It’s rather conspicuous talking here like this. Won’t you get in?” She opened the door.

The Green Lama climbed in. If this was a trap, he thought, he was ready for it.

“In order to get you out,” she said, “I had to take advantage of a little pull to make them put a charge against you so you could be admitted to bail. It was
